"Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to inform you that a decision was just made to postpone the Healthy Cities Conference in Izmir. As you will be aware there have been ongoing demonstrations in Turkey over the past weeks. We, as many of you , have been following these events closely. The decision to postpone our Conference was made based on advice received today from  the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) who informed WHO that there will be major demonstrations on Wednesday and very likely on Thursday  in the central area of Izmir where the hotels in which nearly all our participants will staying are located. According to the UNDSS this area is unsafe and they strongly advised to either move all our participants to hotels outside the city centre or to postpone the meeting. Unfortunately at this late hour moving participants to safer hotels is logistically impossible. We have been in touch with our Healthy City colleagues in Izmir and they are already looking into dates for rescheduling the conference in the autumn.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused by this last minute change of plans. We ask participants to please cancel their reservations as soon as possible. We have been informed that some hotels will not charge anything in cancellation fee while others will charge for the first night only.

Respectfully yours

Agis Tsouros"
